Bachelor of Science in Vision Sciences

Vision sciences is the scientific study of vision, and the development & use of vision-related technologies. It is an interdisciplinary study of visual systems and perception and incorporates many disciplines, including optometry, ophthalmology, molecular genetics, neuroscience, and physiological optics. It encompasses all facets of the visual process, including anatomy, biochemistry, optics and physiology of the eye.

BS Vision Sciences is a four year professional optometry course which includes clinical and practical phases of optometry as well as the theoretical and fundamental aspects of vision sciences. It provides comprehensive knowledge and direct training in areas relevant to a career in Vision Science such as Optics, anatomy and functioning of the eye, eye disorders, clinical optometry, ocular therapy, sensation and perception, psychophysics, and research design, methods and experimentation.

Some of the career choices for BS graduates include Hospital based practices in Private/Public Sector, Private practice, Retail optical practice, Ophthalmic products manufacturers, Academic institutions, and Specialty vision care centers etc.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

The graduates of BS Vision Sciences program are expected to::

  1. Be competent professionals who exhibit theoretical knowledge and practical skills as a vision sciences specialist in healthcare sectors, academia, and industry.
  2. Demonstrate strong professional ethics, social responsibility, interpersonal and social skills.
  3. Engage in life-long learning, graduate-level studies, research or professional development.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

The graduates of BS Vision Sciences are expected to

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the basic organ systems, with special emphasis on the ocular and visual system, optics of eyes and their interrelationships to the body as a whole.
  2. Articulate broad and coherent disciplinary theoretical and technical knowledge in Vision Science and Optometry and their areas of practice.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to acquire, analyze and apply new information in vision sciences.
  4. Demonstrate problem-solving and critical thinking skills that integrate current knowledge and scientific advances in vision sciences.
  5. Apply knowledge and principles in Vision Science and Optometry to work in Ophthalmic Industry.
  6. Have an understanding of professional ethics and challenges to the optometric profession posed by conflicts of interest inherent in health care delivery, and the ability to incorporate those principles into decisions affecting patient care.
  7. Understand the impact of community health care resources and delivery systems to improve access to care.
  8. Demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with a range of audience.
  9. Demonstrate an ability to function effectively in a team as an individual as well as a team member to accomplish a task.
  10. Recognition the need of, and an ability to engage in continuing professional development.
